“Dichotomies” serves as a sonic exploration of the relationships inherent between the self and the other. Originally created as a series of unconventional duo’s – often between instruments and spaces/objects rather than people – it soon grew to being an exploration in the collaboration of distinct “selves” and “others”. A theologian guitarist performing a largely improvised work in a run-down church, a violinist tackling a contemporary score that requires him to play along with numerous versions of himself simultaneously, field recordings of a French wine village at work interspersed with preset sounds from a cheap digital synthesizer, a soon to be father-in-law performing for his soon to be “son”. These potentially disparate sounds were then weaved together to encompass the six tracks of this album, further fracturing the role of the “self” – the composer no longer “composes” directly, but instead arranges and facilitates the realization of his concepts.
